Yes, it is a pretty common ability in almost all programs to add multiple email attachments.

But the big news here is that FileMaker has finally joined the rest of software and now can include multiple attachments to any of its emails it sends out. Yay!

Now, you could always get around this by having FileMaker open up your local email client software. You could then include the attachments the way you always do, by simply selecting the ‘add attachment’ button and then using your file browser to find the files you want to attach. That is still there and has not changed. But that is not an automated solution.

But what has changed is when you use the internal “Send by SMTP” command which would use FileMaker’s internal email system attached to the server. Then you could enter the From, To, Subject, and Content information as well as ONE attachment. Well now that has changed and you can include multiple attachments for FileMaker’s internal scripted email sending options.

That’s big news and it will save a lot of work-arounds which we had to use in the past to get it done. What we had to do in the past to make this work were any of these ideas: require that the file is ‘compressed’ or ‘zipped’ by combing several files together first, and then adding that whole set to an email. Or another work-around was when printing up PDF’s to use the “attach to existing PDF” command within FileMaker to basically merge all required PDF’s into file. Then that ‘combo’ PDF could be attached and sent out. Or we would attach the first file to the email, and then ask the user to attach any others.

None of that is necessary anymore.

Now we can do multiple attachments just like the rest of the world!

Thank you FileMaker 17!
