A nice change which they made in FileMaker 17 is an enhancement to the Master-Detail portal.

If you don’t know what that is, a Master-Detail portal is a UX design in which a portal is on the left-side (typically) of the screen, and displays all the records for that table. So if you are on the Customer layout, then the portal on the left displays all of them. And typically there is a search bar at the top so that you can quickly find the Customer you want. When you find them, you click on their name and then all of their data is displayed in the Detail view on the right. That is the Master-Detail design style.

The enhancement to FileMaker 17 is two-fold. First of all, they have made it very easy to create the M-D relationship now. Almost no coding is needed to make it happen. Secondly, the master portal on the left will now reflect the found set which you have displayed. So instead of displaying all customers, you can limit that portal to show, perhaps, just Active Customers. We were able to do this before, but now it is a much more fluid process to create it and make it happen.

Many of the recent changes to FileMaker Pro have been in the area of making it easier for almost any user to get an application up and running. And many times you can easily create rather sophisticated elements right out of the box.

Way to go, FileMaker!
