Entrepreneurs are the drivers, the movers and shakers of the world. They make things happen. If you launch your agency, then YOU will begin to make things happen in your part of the world.

    Today, we look at the fourth question in this series on starting your own agency:

    4. What? – the Question of Services

Fifth and final question in this series is “How?”

5. How? – the Question of Process

The HOW? question leads to discussions of Process Management and Project Management. But “Process” concerns all aspects of running your Agency, whereas “Project Management” usually only concerns the point where a client hires you.

So let’s look at the issue of Process.

 

Here’s what I learned about software development when I began my agency: I was having a great time coding software and making FileMaker projects for customers. I was good at it and my clients liked what I made for them. No one ever complained about what I BUILT for them. No one complained about WHAT I made. The only complaints were for HOW I ran my company: things like project management, communication, billing, etc. All of those steps which were necessary to run the company, to build great software, were the very things that began to take more and more time, and were targets of complaints.

I realized that “It’s not software development that will get you; it is project management that can create your success or failure!”

That’s when I decided to build my own project management software, which I call Freelance Project Management software. It’s the heart of our company and runs all our operations and processes. It’s also the core of our coaching system in the Can-Do! Network. Just as we use it to run our company, we also use it to train others how to run their companies and stay on top of the myriad tasks in a successful company.

Here are the issues that need to be addressed to run a profitable company. They all fall into the “Process” category:

Starting your own software agency is a wonderful way to make a living and have some fun at the same time. But be sure you can be successful at it. Read through this blog and answer all the questions provided in all five pieces.
